Recommended Restaurant – 1847, Manchester
It was Friday 13th when we decided to go out for food so we were taking a superstitious risk, but after looking at the website of 1847 we could see that we’d be in good hands….although we made sure not to cross paths with any black cats, walk under any ladders or break any mirrors on the way.
When we arrived we were greeted by warm friendly faces and taken to the table, it was quite early (about 6.30pm) and there weren’t many people in. We were made to feel very welcome and the staff were very attentive.
We were brought some cucumber water which wasn’t to our taste, but nevertheless a healthy twist which gives an indication of the restaurant’s attitude towards food and drink.
By the time we’d buried our heads in the menu and decided what we were eating, the restaurant was pretty much full. We’d just beaten the rush, fortunately.
We ordered 2 starters and mains to share as we like to sample as many dishes as possible.
The Starters
For starters we had Spring Pie and Goats Cheese Bon Bons as shown below, they were both delicious.
Worth Mentioning – the beetroot mash with the Spring Pie was sublime.

Spring Pie – puff pastry stuffed with smoked cheddar, marrow, beetroot, spring greens served on bed of cress & marjoram pesto

Goats Cheese Bon Bons – lightly dusted goats cheese with black olives, apples, celery & melba toast (GF)
Favourite Starter– If we had to choose one then the Spring Pie would just have the edge.
The Main Course
For the mains we had the Oyster Medallions and the Summer Veggies as shown below, again they were both delicious.
Worth Mentioning – the Summer Veggies, which looked like a rainbow had landed on the plate, was served with a lemon curd. It was very similar to ours which can found here, which we thought was an unusual combination but worked perfectly. We’ll be using this in a similar way in future. Watch this space.

Oyster Medallions – herb breadcrumb oyster mushrooms, sautéed asparagus & quinoa, roasted garlic sauce (VO, GF)

Summer Veggies – wild garlic velouté, roasted vegetables, celeriac crisps, pumpkin seeds (GF)
Favourite Main Course – In this instance there was a split decision, Krazy Kiwi preferred the Oyster Medallions and Shy Strawberry the Summer Veggies.
Worth Mentioning – the presentation of all the food was exemplary.
We’ve taken some material from the website to give you a feel of what the company represents and who’s behind the delicious food.
‘1847 is a growing collection of vegetarian restaurants with sites across the U.K.
The restaurant is named after the year the vegetarian society formed, 1847 serves modern dishes across four menus; á la carte, taster, Sunday lunch and express lunch.’
Damien Davenport, the founder and managing director quotes on the website that ‘I opened 1847 with one aim, to push the boundaries of vegetarian food. That was in 2011 with just a Head Chef and me working ‘front of house’. We’ve come a long way since then.
Now, we are the only national group of vegetarian restaurants with sites in Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Brighton, employing a team of sixty fantastic people. Our ’team’ are just as important as the food we serve. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today and, as a company, we take pride in their training and development. I’m really proud that we have recently recruited a number of apprentices across all four sites and we are determined to give them the support that they need to become our chefs and managers of the future.’
The main menu can be found on the link below for you to have a look through.

All in all it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening – the atmosphere was good, the service was great, as was the food. We would certainly recommend 1847.
